How Bengaluru Authorities Plan To Use AI For Effective Traffic Management: Find Out

In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion in Bengaluru, officials have decided to deploy Artificial Intelligence tools for monitoring traffic at 20 key junctions, Map APIs, Emoji speed alert displays, and other advanced technologies, Moneycontrol reported.

Advanced data analytics will be used to monitor traffic congestion in the roads including Outer Ring Road, Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Hosur Road, Bellary Road, Mysuru Road, Tumakuru Road, and Bannerghatta Road. The designated firm will be tasked with creating an artificial intelligence-powered search engine to effectively handle and manage traffic flow.

How Bengaluru Authorities Plan To Use AI For Effective Traffic Management: Find Out

"AI software (smart traffic engine) will primarily aid us in monitoring the congestion levels/ vehicle queue lengths on 20 identified high-density corridors," Moneycontrol quoted Joint Commissioner of police (Bengaluru traffic), MN Anucheth as saying.

"Insights from data analytics will enable us to understand patterns in traffic congestion, accidents, and violations, as well as road user perceptions sourced from multiple third-party platforms. Predictive analytics will play a key role, providing advanced alerts for upcoming congestion, along with responsive action plans," a senior police official told the website.

The firm will be responsible for crafting an AI-driven search engine to aid the police in traffic management, the officials said. The data will enable the police to analyze traffic patterns, incidents, and violations. The police can implement proactive action plans and communicate potential congestion points to commuters.

The chosen firm for the project will design a map application that alerts the police to various factors contributing to traffic disruptions, such as fallen trees, accidents, vehicle breakdowns, waterlogging, and other incidents. This information will be disseminated to commuters through messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and others.

Emoji Displays to Warn Against Speed Violations
On 20 high-density corridors, emojis will be placed to showcase speeds ranging from 5 to 199 kmph. With a detection range spanning 5 to 300 meters and a visibility of over 0300 meters, the displays will feature red-faced emojis for vehicles exceeding speed limits and green emojis for those adhering to speed regulations. The initiative will target key areas prone to speed violations, including Airport Road, Electronic City Flyover, Goraguntepalya, Nayandahalli Road, and other locations with a high incidence of speed-related offences.

Traffic Surveillance For PTZ Cameras
On 12 major locations, the Bengaluru City Police will instal PTZ cameras for traffic surveillance. "We will also install cameras on high-rise buildings at 12 major junctions. Currently, we are utilising three drones, and an additional five drones will be procured soon," Anucheth stated. The traffic department is in the process of acquiring 1,000 metal barriers, 5,000 tubular cones, and road stud reflectors to enhance the efficient management of traffic.
