Hindi Vs Kannada Debate Reignites As Bengaluru Man Objects To 'Anaar' On Receipt

In another episode of the heated Hindi-Kannada debate on social media, a Kannada activist was left upset after a fruit and vegetable shop printed the Hindi name of a fruit on his receipt.

Surprised by the use of the word "anaar" for pomegranate, the individual took to social media to express his disappointment.

"We were supposed to teach them one word a day.. but here they are, teaching us one word a day," he wrote in his post, alongside a photo of the receipt showing his purchase of apples and pomegranates (labelled as "anaar").

The term "anaar" is commonly used for pomegranate in North India, has Persian origins, and is also found in languages such as Punjabi, Nepali and Bengali.

The post attracted thousands of views, and the comments were divided over the use of the word. Some agreed that receipts should state 'pomegranate', while others contended that "anaar" is a widely accepted name for the fruit.

"Many times we go to our fresh fruit juice shops and don't know what pomegranate is...anaar, pomegranate is the just the same," commented one user.

Another added, "I didn't know that. I came to know after seeing the comments of our Kannada friends here. That's not the point, it's just a pity that our Kannadigas haven't adapted to those words so quickly. That's why it's easy to impose a foreign language."

Some users failed to see any reason for discontent. "You asked for a pomegranate and he gave it to you, what's your problem again," one remarked.

"It's not in all Kannada except for one word. Please adjust it. Have no problem with Apple, but will go bonkers on Anaar," stated another.
