H S Venkatesh Murthy Death: Eminent Kannada Poet Dies at 80

Renowned Kannada poet, playwright, and critic Dr. Hodigere Shanbhog Venkatesha Murthy, often referred to by his initials, HSV, passed away early Friday morning, May 30, in Bengaluru. He was 80 and had been suffering from age-related health problems. A towering figure in Kannada literature, HSV's voice resonated across poetry, drama, academia, and film.

Born on June 23, 1944, in the village of Hodigere in Channagiri taluk, Davangere district, Murthy was the son of Narayana Bhatta and Nagaratnamma. His rural upbringing left a lasting imprint on his work, infusing his writing with the rhythms, realities, and soul of village life.

He earned a master's degree in Kannada from Bangalore University and went on to serve as a Kannada professor at St. Joseph's Commerce College for nearly 30 years. He later completed his Ph.D. with a dissertation titled "Kathanakavanas in Kannada." He also chaired the 85th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, reflecting his stature in the literary world.

A Voice That Echoed Through Generations

Over the course of his prolific career, Murthy authored more than 100 works. His standout poetry collections include Parivritta, Bagilu, Badiva Janagalu, Saugandhika, and Moovattu Malegaala. His plays-such as Hejjegalu, Ondu Sainika Vruttanta, and Agnivarna-were equally acclaimed for their depth and realism.

Beyond the page and stage, HSV left an indelible mark on Kannada cinema and television. He wrote lyrics and dialogues for films like Chinnari Mutha, Kotreshi Kanasu, America America, Maitri, and Kirik Party. His title tracks for serials like Mukta and Mahaparva remain beloved.

He has received numerous awards and served as the president of the 85th Sahitya Sammelana held in Kalaburagi.

He passed away at 7 a.m. at BGS Hospital. He has left behind his four sons. His death has sparked a wave of tributes from across the literary, academic, and cultural spheres, marking the loss of a writer who helped shape the voice of modern Kannada literature.
