Goods Vehicles Banned at Bengaluru University's Jnanabharathi Campus, Here's Why

To enhance safety and ensure an undisturbed academic environment, the movement of goods vehicles has been prohibited within the Jnanabharathi campus of Bengaluru University. Heavy vehicles such as tipper lorries, tempos, and goods autos had been using the campus as a shortcut to bypass traffic congestion on Mysuru Road while traveling to Ullal. This practice not only disrupted academic activities but also posed a significant risk to students.

Responding to repeated appeals from the university administration, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda issued an order restricting the entry of goods vehicles into the campus. "Goods vehicles from Ullal, Mariyappanapalya, Nagarabhavi Circle, and Jnanabharathi must now use alternative routes," confirmed a university spokesperson.

The ban on vehicles had been a persistent demand from students, who raised safety concerns after a tragic incident in 2022. Shilpashree, a postgraduate Mathematics student, lost her life after falling off a BMTC bus on campus, underscoring the urgent need for traffic control within university grounds.

"We had a meeting with the police department two months ago and decided to restrict goods vehicles," said Vice-Chancellor Jayakar Shetty. He added, "The increasing traffic inside the campus was not only posing a safety hazard for students but also contributing to rising pollution levels."

The unrestricted traffic flow within the campus has long been a source of frustration for students and faculty. Last year's tragic accident involving a speeding vehicle highlighted the urgent need for traffic control. However, the recent influx of public vehicles has exacerbated the problem, sparking renewed concerns over safety and campus tranquility.
