Going To War Against Pakistan Will Not Benefit Anyone: Actress Ramya

Kannada actress and former Congress IT Cell Head Ramya aka Divya Spandana has said that going to war against Pakistan will not benefit anyone, and the government should ensure that such incidents do not occur again.

Declaring War Over Our Failures Not Right

Speaking to a reporter in Bengaluru, the actress, who is known as the Golden Girl in Sandalwood, said that she is against violence in any form. "I am not for violence. I don't think going to war against Pakistan is an answer. We elect the leaders to safeguard us and protect us. Declaring war over their failures is not right. In the end, our soldiers will only die," Ramya said.

The former Mandya MP said that it is the duty of the government to ensure that such incidents do not repeat. "My personal opinion is I am not for violence in any form as it doesn't benefit anyone," she added. Her statement comes at a time when there is a growing demand for the country to give a befitting reply to Pakistan over the recent Pahalgam incident which killed 26 civilians.

Ramya forayed into politics in 2013 by contesting in the Mandya bypolls. Thereafter, she had served as the head of the Congress IT Cell.

'Pakistan... Not Hell' Controversy

In 2016, she triggered a major controversy when she claimed that Pakistan was "not hell" after returning from Islamabad. She had gone to Pakistan with a group of young South Asian parliamentarians.

She had said that Pakistanis were very much like Indians, and treated the visitors very well. "With a complaint of sedition filed against me, I stand by my remarks that Pakistan is not hell and I see no reason to withdraw or apologise for it. It's ironical that in a country where people get away with crimes such as a murder, those that seek peace are targeted," she said in a blog.

A sedition case was filed against her and called an "anti-national" by the BJP workers and right-wing sympathisers.

However, Ramya quit her position in 2019. She is now preparing to make her comeback to films.
