From Old Madras Road To Bidadi: Bengaluru’s Metro Expansion Plans Gain Momentum

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, has unveiled plans to extend the Bengaluru Metro Rail network to Nelamangala, Hoskote, and Bidadi. The proposed expansion is part of an effort to tackle severe traffic congestion in Bengaluru, particularly along Old Madras Road, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters in the city.

The announcement was made during a state assembly session where Sharath Bache Gowda raised concerns about traffic issues between KR Puram and Hoskote. Shivakumar acknowledged the challenges and revealed that a detailed survey is underway to assess the feasibility of extending metro services to these areas. "I am aware of the traffic challenges in the region, and we are planning solutions. Both the state government and Namma Metro are addressing the concerns," he stated. The Deputy CM also noted that around 10,000 individuals commute daily from Kolar to Bengaluru by train for work, further emphasizing the need for improved connectivity.

Metro Expansion

In addition to easing traffic, the metro extension aims to bolster Bengaluru's infrastructure. Embassy Office Parks REIT has pledged over ₹100 crore to support metro projects. CEO Aravind Maiya highlighted their efforts, including constructing a flyover and footbridge near Manyata Tech Park, with investments exceeding ₹200 crore. He stressed the significance of such collaborations in solving Bengaluru's infrastructure challenges.

Private sector involvement is not new to Bengaluru's metro development. The Embassy Group previously funded the Bettahalasur metro station project in 2020, costing approximately ₹140 crore, linking Bagalur Cross and Trumpet Junction. Such initiatives underline the growing partnership between government bodies and private entities in enhancing the city's transportation infrastructure.

The proposed metro expansion represents a significant step toward addressing Bengaluru's traffic woes and improving urban connectivity. By combining public and private resources, the Karnataka government aims to enhance the quality of life for residents, ensuring sustainable urban development.
