Ensure That Interests Of Kannadigas Are Protected: MB Patil On Karnataka’s Job Reservation Bill

Karnataka's initiative to reserve jobs for locals in the private sector has stirred debate among its ministers, highlighting differing perspectives. Commerce & Industries Minister MB Patil emphasized the state's commitment to balancing interests amidst the move towards industrialization.

"Karnataka is advancing rapidly, and we cannot afford to lag behind in this era of industrial growth. Our priority is to safeguard everyone's interests," Patil affirmed. "Industries need not fear; we assure them that their concerns will be addressed."

MB Patil On Karnataka s Job Reservation

The Karnataka cabinet recently greenlit the draft State Employment of Local Candidates in Industries, Factories, and Other Establishments Bill, 2024. The bill mandates 50 percent reservation for local candidates (Kannadigas) in managerial roles and 70 percent in non-managerial positions in the private sector. Additionally, it proposes a 100 percent quota for Kannadigas in Group C and D jobs (blue-collar workers).

Patil underlined the competitive dynamics driving Karnataka's stance: "Amidst India's manufacturing boom, driven by the global 'China Plus One' strategy, states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are striving for excellence. Each state must peak competitively."

He pledged to consult extensively with the Chief Minister, IT-BT Minister, Law Minister, and Labour Minister to ensure Kannadigas' interests are safeguarded alongside industry needs.

Labour Minister Santosh Lad emphasized the bill's focus on prioritizing Kannadigas, especially since many private firms receive government subsidies. "We aim to enhance local employment opportunities through this legislation," Lad stated, noting that the draft will be presented during the ongoing legislative session.

Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Draft Bill, 2024, with calls for extending the deadline for public input from aggregators and tech industry bodies. Minister Priyank Kharge acknowledged these concerns, affirming a thorough review to ensure a beneficial outcome for all stakeholders.
