Double-Decker Flyovers Planned For Bengaluru To Ease Traffic Gridlock

Relief from traffic congestion in Bengaluru is on the horizon, with the Karnataka government planning double-decker road-cum-Metro flyover. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has proposed constructing such flyovers to address the issue.

The flyovers, where the lower deck will be used by vehicles and top deck by Metro, will come up on Outer Ring Road (ORR) west corridor at two places - Kanakapura Road-Sarakki (1.3km) and Kamakhya-Ittamadu-Hosakerehalli (1.5km).

As part of 44.6 km Namma Metro Phase III, spanning from J.P. Nagar 4th phase to Kempapura, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will oversee the construction of these flyovers. The first flyover, extending over 1.366 km, will connect the Kanakapura Road junction to the Sarakki junction. The second flyover, spanning 1.563 km, will link Kamakya - Ittamadu - Hoskerehalli junction.

Designed with an integrated structure, these flyovers will feature roads on the first level and a metro corridor on the second level. Both the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the BMRCL have agreed on the necessity of these road-cum-metro flyovers to alleviate traffic congestion in the city.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Metro Tunnel Boring Machine Bhadra at KG Halli, Shivakumar praised the progress of the Airport Metro line (KR Pura-Hebbal-Kempegowda International Airport). He directed authorities to construct two levels in areas where pillars are yet to be erected.

Shivakumar highlighted that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) would collaborate on this initiative. The BBMP will finance the road flyover, while the BMRCL will manage the Metro costs.

He expressed confidence that this joint initiative would alleviate Bengaluru's traffic crisis, citing similar successful projects in Nagpur. He also mentioned plans to implement Metro plus road lines in future Metro expansions.

Bengaluru often experiences massive traffic jams throughout the year. Currently, the city's first double-decker flyover, spanning 3.35 km between Ragigudda and Central Silk Board on Marenahalli Road, is under construction and will be completed in the coming months. This flyover, designed for vehicle use on the lower deck and Metro on the upper deck, is part of the Metro's fully elevated RV Road-Bommasandra Yellow Line corridor (18.8 km) under Phase 2.
