Doppler Weather Radar System To Be Installed In Bengaluru By Year End
In a significant move to bolster weather forecasting capabilities in Bengaluru, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has approved the installation of a Doppler radar in the city, set to be operational by the end of the year. This is a major step towards better weather forecasting and preparedness for natural disasters.
Shobha Karandlaje, the Minister of State for MSME and Labour and Employment and the Bengaluru North MP, had written to Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh seeking the installation of a Doppler Weather Radar in Bengaluru.

The weather agency announced the installation of a C-Band Doppler Weather Radar in Bengaluru within this year. This radar, with an operational range of 250 km, aims to strengthen the early warning system, benefiting numerous stakeholders and the public.
The site for the radar installation has already been identified, and discussions with State Government authorities are underway to finalize the acquisition.
The proposed C-Band Doppler Weather Radar in Bengaluru will not only protect state infrastructure and economies during natural disasters but also significantly enhance the accuracy of weather forecasts and provide early warnings of severe weather conditions.
In a letter addressed to Dr. Singh on June 26, Karandlaje highlighted the long-felt and urgent need of Bengaluru residents for a Doppler Weather Radar.
"Bengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, is a rapidly growing metropolis with a population that is highly vulnerable to weather-related disturbances, particularly during the monsoon season. The recent increase in un-predicted heavy rainfall, resulting in flash floods, has highlighted the urgent necessity for advanced weather forecasting systems to mitigate the adverse effects of such natural disasters," the letter stated.
Having a Doppler Weather Radar would significantly enhance the accuracy of weather forecasts, providing early warnings of severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, heavy rains, and cyclones.
The installation of this radar in the city will complement the existing meteorological infrastructure and provide a more comprehensive network of weather monitoring systems in Karnataka.
