Cubbon Park Traffic Ban Lifted: Bengaluru Residents Voice Concerns

The authorities in Bengaluru have lifted the ban on vehicular traffic inside Cubbon Park, applying specifically to the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, coinciding with government holidays. Chief Secretary Rajneesh Goel has granted approval for the revocation, though this decision has sparked concerns among the city's residents regarding the potential adverse effects on the central green space.

During a three-month experimental period, vehicles will be permitted inside Cubbon Park, with the results to be reviewed afterward by a committee chaired by the chief secretary, which will then decide whether to make the change permanent.

The designated route for vehicles extends from Prof Siddalingaiah Circle, also known as Cafe Coffee Day Circle, to the High Court's gateway. Proponents of the decision, including key officials, believe it will help alleviate traffic congestion in the central business district.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth highlighted the current traffic ban's impact on alternative routes in the central business district during holidays and requested relaxation of the existing regulations. The government should consider revoking the ban to ease traffic congestion, he argued, citing challenges such as increased footfall leading to vehicles being parked in unauthorized areas or motorists struggling to find parking spaces.

The committee, after thorough deliberation, concluded that allowing traffic on holidays would only affect approximately 10% of the park, potentially aiding in mitigating traffic congestion in the busiest parts of downtown.

However, critics have expressed opposition to the decision. A resident of Lavelle Road questioned the government's commitment to the "Brand Bengaluru" initiative, criticizing the move as suffocating green spaces like Cubbon Park without clear benefits for visitors or those traveling to the central business district.

A spokesperson from the community support group Heritage Beku raised concerns about the authorities neglecting previously studied data on vehicle emissions, noise pollution, and their impact on the park's flora and fauna.
