Cricket Stadium Bommasandra: Bengaluru's Surya City To House 80,000 Seating Capacity

In Bengaluru, a new cricket stadium is set to rise in Bommasandra's Surya City. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the construction of a mega sports complex costing ₹1,650 crore. This facility will feature an 80,000-seat cricket stadium. Once completed, it will be India's second-largest cricket stadium after Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has ambitious plans for a sports hub on Bengaluru's southern outskirts. Spanning 100 acres, this project includes not just cricket but also eight indoor and outdoor arenas, modern gyms, training facilities, Olympic-sized pools, guest houses, hostels, hotels, and a convention hall for international events.

Focus on Safety and Infrastructure

The decision to build this new stadium follows a tragic incident at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. During the Royal Challengers Bangalore celebration on June 4, a stampede outside led to 11 deaths. The venue's limited capacity of 32,000 seats and its small 17-acre size were deemed unsafe for large events by an investigation led by Justice John Michael Cunha.

The investigation recommended relocating major matches to larger venues with ample parking and crowd management facilities. Consequently, authorities denied permission for the Maharaja Trophy 2025 at Chinnaswamy Stadium, moving it to Mysuru instead. This has raised doubts about hosting five Women's World Cup matches and the IPL in Bengaluru in the near future.

Enhancing Sports Infrastructure

This new sports complex aims to address these concerns by providing state-of-the-art facilities. It will house the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence. The venue will be capable of hosting international cricket matches, IPL games, and other significant events.
