Chikkamagaluru Bans Liquor Sales On January 8, Here's Why

In light of the upcoming Bhima Koregaon victory celebrations coordinated by an alliance of Dalit organizations and other groups, Chikkamagaluru has enforced a prohibition on liquor sales for the entire day of January 8. This decision comes as the city prepares for a significant gathering that will see an estimated 20-25 thousand participants, including followers of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, joining a grand procession. The march is set to commence at the city’s K.E.B. Circle, proceeding through M.G. Road, and concluding with an open meeting at Azad Park Circle.

To ensure public peace and maintain law and order during this large-scale event, authorities have mandated the closure of all liquor outlets within a 5 km radius of Chikkamagaluru city, covering areas under city and Basavanahalli police station jurisdictions. This ban, effective from 6 am to 11 pm on January 8, encompasses a wide range of establishments, including those licensed under CL-2, 4, 6A, 7, 9, 11, 14, among others. The directive extends to the prohibition of transportation, storage, manufacture, supply, and sale of all excise goods such as liquor, beer, and spirits.

Enhancing Public Safety

The directive, issued by District Magistrate Meena Nagaraj C.N., underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring a peaceful and orderly celebration. By restricting alcohol sales, the authorities aim to minimize any potential disturbances that could arise during the event, thereby safeguarding both the participants and the general public. This preventive measure reflects the administration's proactive approach to managing large public gatherings and highlights the significance of the Bhima Koregaon victory celebrations in the region.

The Bhima Koregaon celebrations in Chikkamagaluru are not only a reflection of the area's vibrant cultural tapestry but also an acknowledgement of the historical significance and the enduring legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar among his admirers. By facilitating a safe and respectful environment for the event, Chikkamagaluru demonstrates its commitment to honoring this important occasion while ensuring the well-being of its residents and visitors.
