Cauvery Water Price Hike: D.K. Shivakumar Stands Firm To Raise Bengaluru Water Bill

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the state governemnt will soon revise water tariff in Bengaluru. Despite facing criticism, Shivakumar affirmed his commitment to the hike, stating, "Criticism from the public or opposition will not sway my decision. I stand firm on this increase."

Shivakumar responded to skeptics questioning his motives, saying, "Regardless of the efforts we make for the citizens, some will never acknowledge them. Reactions on WhatsApp show varied opinions, but I remain undeterred."

The event, held in front of the Vidhana Soudha, also saw the launch of the Cauvery Connection Campaign. This initiative aims to extend Cauvery water connections to 110 villages across the Bommanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, T. Dasarahalli, Batarayanapura, and Mahadevpura constituencies.

In addition to the Cauvery Connection Campaign, Shivakumar inaugurated several projects designed to enhance water management, including the Rainwater Harvesting Awareness Campaign, the Varunamitra Training Program, and the United Nations Innovation Project for Water Security in Bangalore.

Shivakumar highlighted the significance of water and power under his purview, recalling his previous role as Urban Development Minister during S.M. Krishna's administration. He noted his experience studying privatization models in France, which he deemed unsuitable for Karnataka. "Opposition to privatization remains strong, and I will not entertain it while I am in office," he assured.

Addressing the long-standing issue of water rates in Bangalore, Shivakumar pointed out that despite the city's population growth to 14 million, rates have remained unchanged. He expressed optimism about the Mekedatu project and acknowledged ongoing opposition to the Sharavati drinking water scheme.

Shivakumar also introduced new irrigation regulations, stating, "A new law now prohibits drilling bore wells within 500 meters of water canals. Direct tapping from these canals is forbidden." He confirmed that the Governor has approved the law and that water prices will rise soon.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has been directed to provide a comprehensive report on water usage and the last rate increase. BWSSB President Ramprasad Manohar praised Shivakumar's leadership, noting Bangalore's international recognition for water conservation. The day's events included launching the door-to-door water supply project for 110 villages and the rainwater harvesting awareness campaign.
