BJP's Royal Gambit In Mysuru-Kodagu: Wodeyar Replaces Pratap Simha, Stirring Vokkaliga Debate

The BJP has chosen not to field two-time MP Pratap Simha for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Mysuru-Kodagu constituency, opting instead for the royal Yaduveer Wadiyar. This decision shakes the political landscape of Mysuru, as it has sparked a debate regarding the representation of the Vokkaliga community. The Congress party sees this as an opportunity to win over the Vokkaliga votes, given the discontent among BJP supporters who had demonstrated strong backing for Simha. The situation is further complicated by the sidelining of former Chief Minister DV Sadanand Gowda, a move that has upset the Vokkaliga community.

The intrigue surrounding the Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha seat, a key constituency, has intensified with the BJP's candidate announcement. There's also a buzz about who will secure the Congress ticket, with speculation high around KPCC spokesperson M. Laxman being a prominent contender. Despite the emergence of 14 aspirants from the Congress, the spotlight is on representing the Vokkaliga community, with names like Dr. BJ Vijaya Kumar, and Chandramouli from Kodagu being floated as possible candidates.

However, Congress faces a significant challenge in finding a strong candidate to compete against Yaduveer Wadiyar. This dilemma is perceived as a major setback, especially since the chosen candidate will represent the Chief Minister's home constituency. The urgency to find a potent contender echoes the party's strategy, albeit at a slower pace, as they aim to field a candidate who can effectively rival Wodeyar. Notably, the Congress's search for a candidate comes in the wake of their defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where their candidate, H. Vishwanath, was unsuccessful.

Despite the BJP initiating its election campaign with Yaduveer Wadiyar at the forefront, the Congress has maintained a notable silence, hinging their strategy on the imminent announcement of their candidate. The political atmosphere is tense, with 21 other constituencies awaiting the revelation of their Congress representatives. A key meeting of the Congress Election Committee (CEC) is scheduled in Delhi on March 19, with expectations for the candidate list to be released by March 20. Meanwhile, Wodeyar has begun his campaign, seeking blessings from religious leaders and engaging with the community on the streets, setting the stage for a closely watched election battle in Mysuru-Kodagu.
