Namma Metro Renaming: Should It Lose Its Name? The Public Weighs In
Bengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, is a bustling metropolis known for its technological advancements, diverse culture, and, of course, its Namma Metro. Namma Metro, which translates to "Our Metro" in Kannada, is an essential mode of transportation for the city's residents.
The proposal put forth by Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil to rename the entire Namma metro rail network in honor of Basavanna has ignited a lively online discussion.

A recent poll survey conducted by Oneindia on YouTube has sparked a debate whether Bengaluru's Namma Metro should be renamed.
OneIndia poll survey revealed that 56 per cent of respondents were in favor of renaming the metro system, while 39 per cent were against it, and 6 per cent were unsure.
Supporters of renaming the metro system have put forward a variety of alternatives, including 'Namma Basava' or 'Basava Metro' in tribute to the pioneering social reformer Basavanna. Others have suggested 'Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Metro' to honor the actor Shankarnag, who originally conceived the metro. In the same vein, there are calls to name it after revered figures like Dr. Rajkumar.
On the other side of the debate, those opposed to renaming Namma Metro argue that the current name holds significant sentimental and cultural value to the city's residents. "Namma Metro" is not just a name; it's a reflection of the local pride and ownership that people feel toward the metro system. Changing the name, they say, would strip away this sense of belonging and cultural identity.
Many residents assert argue that 'Namma Metro' is more than just a name; it represents a profound emotional bond for Bengalureans. Over the course of the past twelve years, this appellation has woven itself into the very fabric of the daily lives of millions of commuters.
Furthermore, some argue that retaining the current name demonstrates respect for the metro's history and the strong emotional connection it fosters. A potential compromise has surfaced, proposing the dedication of a major station or interchange junction to Basaveshwara. This approach seeks to strike a harmonious balance between paying homage to history and upholding the name 'Namma Metro.'
The discussion extends to the corridors themselves. Currently, they are distinguished by colors, but there are voices advocating for their replacement with names representing prominent Kannada dynasties such as Chalukya, Rashtrakuta, Hoysala, Ganga, and Kadamba. Advocates for the status quo stress the importance of concentrating on the ongoing expansion and enhancement of the metro system.
