Bengaluru's IOC Junction To Get Relief: Elevated Rotary Flyover At MV Station And RoB Project Approved

Bengaluru's infamous IOC Junction, known for its heavy traffic and congestion, is finally set to get some much-needed relief. The Karnataka cabinet recently approved a project for a Rs 263 crore elevated rotary flyover near Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal and an additional two-lane railway overbridge (RoB) at Byappanhalli railway level crossing in the city.

The estimated cost of these two projects is Rs 263 crore.

The project, a first-of-its-kind in Bengaluru, will be taken up on design, build, operate (maintain), and transfer (DBOT) model.

During a press briefing, State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil stated that the cabinet has also given the green light for the white-topping of roads in Bengaluru city, with an anticipated cost of Rs 1,200 crore.

"This white-topping project was decided earlier. This is merely a ratification," he clarified. Administrative approval was granted to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board to provide drinking water to 110 villages that lacked piped water supply. These villages were incorporated into the limits of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike as far back as 2006.

The South Western Railway and Suburban Railway Authority (K-RIDE) have issued no-objection certificates endorsing the construction of the elevated corridor, as stated in the letter to the UDD. Mobility expert Sanjeev Dyamannavar suggested that instead of a complex elevated structure prone to bottlenecks, the BBMP could consider building a flyover and an underpass. There is a prevailing consensus that the efforts to provide efficient access to the Baiyappanahalli terminal are progressing sluggishly. The third terminal, named after Sir M Visvesvaraya, was inaugurated in June 2022.
