Bengaluru's Eastern Connectivity Tunnel To Divert 30% Airport Traffic Away From Hebbal Flyover
Bengaluru is set to enhance connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) with the construction of the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel, a transformative project aimed at reducing travel time for commuters from the city's eastern regions.
This ambitious infrastructure project promises to cut travel times by up to 30 minutes, directly linking Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Mahadevapura to the airport.

The Eastern Connectivity Tunnel is a key component of Bangalore International Airport Limited's (BIAL) ₹16,500 crore expansion plan aimed at addressing the growing aviation needs of Bengaluru. Scheduled to begin construction this year and be completed in three years, the tunnel will divert approximately 30% of airport-bound traffic, easing congestion around the Hebbal overpass and other critical routes.
By offering a vital alternative for travelers from the eastern state highway, the tunnel aims to improve commutes and reduce the city's notorious traffic bottlenecks.
Hari Marar, CEO of BIAL, highlighted the tunnel's significance in improving traffic flow and providing a quicker, more reliable route to KIA. The project is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the increasing travel demands of Bengaluru's growing population and economy.
Broader Airport Expansion Initiatives
The tunnel is one of several projects under BIAL's expansion plan. Other key developments include:
- Terminal 3 Development: Enhancing passenger capacity to meet increasing demands.
- Two New Metro Stations: Improving airport accessibility via public transport.
- Taxiway Upgrades: Ensuring smoother aircraft operations.
These efforts are crucial as KIA gears up to handle an estimated 85 million passengers annually by 2030-32, far exceeding earlier forecasts.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has reaffirmed the government's dedication to tackling Bengaluru's traffic challenges. He announced plans to launch an underground tunnel project in the first half of 2025, expected to alleviate congestion citywide.
"Despite metro operations, traffic issues persist. The upcoming underground tunnel will be a game-changer, addressing Bengaluru's traffic problems comprehensively," Shivakumar stated.
The Eastern Connectivity Tunnel is a key component of Bengaluru Airport's growth strategy. Beyond improving accessibility to KIA, the project is poised to enhance efficiency and complement broader efforts to address Bengaluru's traffic crisis.
As these initiatives take shape, they mark a significant step toward meeting the demands of Bengaluru's expanding economy and its ever-growing population.
