Bengaluru Zero Shadow Day: Sun's Perfect Alignment Leaves No Shadows

Residents of Bengaluru were treated to a rare celestial phenomenon - Zero Shadow Day - on April 24, when the sun stood directly overhead at around 12:17 PM, causing vertical objects to cast no shadow for a brief moment.

According to a report by The Times of India, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) had confirmed the timing of this fascinating event. It occurred when the sun was positioned exactly at the zenith, or directly above the city, resulting in sunlight hitting the ground at a perfect 90-degree angle. As a result, shadows of upright objects completely vanished from sight, leaving onlookers both curious and amazed.

Bengaluru Zero Shadow Day

This striking optical illusion is only visible in regions located between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer. Cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mangaluru fall within this band and witness Zero Shadow Day twice a year - once around April 24 or 25, and again around August 18. The exact dates may shift slightly each year due to the Earth's orbit.

What Happened on Zero Shadow Day?

On April 24, as the sun reached its highest point in the sky, Bengalureans observed that typical shadows cast by poles, buildings, and even people vanished momentarily. This effect was fleeting, lasting only a few seconds, as the sun's angle quickly shifted due to the Earth's rotation.

The science behind the event lies in the Earth's 23.5-degree axial tilt, which affects how sunlight reaches different locations across the globe. Only regions within the Tropics experience the sun directly overhead at some point during the year.

A Rare Sight and a Learning Moment

For many in Bengaluru, the phenomenon was more than just a cool visual trick - it served as a valuable learning opportunity. Zero Shadow Day offered a real-world demonstration of how the Earth's tilt and movement impact the way sunlight interacts with objects on the surface.

The next Zero Shadow Day in Bengaluru is expected to occur around August 18, offering yet another chance for residents to marvel at this fascinating alignment of sun and Earth.
