Bengaluru Weather: Will Cyclone Remal Bring Rains In Garden City?

Bengaluru and Karnataka residents can expect relief from the heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate showers for the next five days.

Weather Predictions

According to the IMD, the showers are due to a cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast. Additionally, Cyclone Remal's movement in the Bay of Bengal contributes to this weather pattern. While this cyclone in the central Bay of Bengal is too far to impact directly, the Arabian Sea's circulation will likely bring thunderstorms across Karnataka.

An IMD scientist explained, "The cyclonic circulation, approximately 5.8 kilometres above sea level in the Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, is likely to bring about light thunderstorms across Karnataka. However, the depression in the Bay of Bengal caused by Cyclone Remal is too distant to influence us directly."

Expected Rainfall

The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Karnataka by the first week of June. Despite the expected reduction in rainfall over the next five days, regions like Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, and Chitradurga may experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Bengaluru, having faced a dry spell for the past six months, has already seen moderate to heavy rains in several parts over the past week.

Recent Weather Impact

IMD data indicate that Bengaluru Urban recorded a 96 per cent departure from normal rainfall between 16 and 22 May. This rainfall brings much-needed relief to the residents who have been dealing with a heatwave. Last month, Bengaluru recorded its second-hottest day in 50 years, with temperatures soaring to 38.2 degrees Celsius. This extreme weather has been attributed to the El Nino effect and global warming.

The upcoming showers will be a respite for Bengaluru residents, mitigating the recent heat's effects.
