Bengaluru Water Crisis: Chiranjeevi Advocates For Permaculture Solutions To Tackle Water Problem

Evidence of this is seen in his recent tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, where the water crisis in Bangalore and its potential impact on other regions were discussed with pictures The concept of permaculture and its effectiveness in water usage were also addressed by him.

Chiranjeevi discusses the water crisis in Bangalore

While talking about the crisis, he emphasised its potential occurrence anywhere. In his Kannada post, he stated, "Though lengthy, the message is concise and crucial."

As we all know, water, the most precious commodity, renders daily life challenging when scarcity strikes. Today, there might be a water shortage in Bangalore, but tomorrow it could occur anywhere," he remarked.

He then detailed the method employed to store water in his farmhouse in Bangalore, stating, "Thus, I wish to utilize this opportunity to stress the necessity of constructing houses conducive to water conservation. Here, the approach undertaken for my farmhouse in Bangalore is shared. Recharge wells, ranging from 20 to 36 feet in depth, have been installed at strategic locations across the site, with adequate slopes directing surface water flow towards the recharge wells. Each well features a filter system and a silt trap comprising various aggregates, including rock sizes and sand, facilitating the passage of water through the layers."

It was also mentioned in his post that "Compared to a recharge pit, a recharge well has the capacity to store more water and facilitate a slower flow of water through porous substrate layers to reach deeper aquifers. Permaculture principles have also been implemented by me. The circular principle of rejuvenating the environment and ensuring self-sustainability characterizes permaculture. One of the significant outcomes of permaculture is the reduction in water demand, achieved through mulching with dead leaves and wood chips, coupled with appropriate ground cover using a garden that minimizes evaporative loss from the soil."

According to the Karnataka government, a shortage of about 500 million litres of water per day (MLD) is being faced by Bengaluru against the requirement of 2,600 MLDs. The water crisis in Bengaluru, resulting from deficient rains, has led to the depletion of many borewells.
