Bengaluru Water Crisis: BWSSB Imposes Fines On Wasting Drinking Water On Non-Essential Activities

Bengaluru Water Crisis: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has introduced a ban on using drinking water for activities such as vehicle washing, gardening, and road cleaning. This measure aims to address the city's impending water crisis. Violators of this ban will face a fine of Rs 5,000, with additional penalties for repeated offenses.

With summer approaching and groundwater levels dropping, BWSSB Chairman Dr Ram Prasath Manohar announced these restrictions. The order prohibits the use of potable water for non-essential purposes like construction, decorative fountains, and entertainment in malls and cinema halls. A daily fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for continued non-compliance.

Officials stress that these measures are crucial to combat the city's looming water shortage. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have warned about a potential crisis due to declining groundwater levels and inadequate rainfall. The guidelines align with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964.

Residents are urged to report any violations by contacting the BWSSB call center at 1916. Dr Manohar's official statement encourages public participation in enforcing these rules to ensure effective water conservation across the city.

The BWSSB's initiative highlights the urgent need for sustainable water management practices in Bengaluru. As groundwater levels continue to deplete, it is essential for residents to adhere to these restrictions and contribute to preserving this vital resource.

By implementing these measures, Bengaluru aims to mitigate the effects of its water scarcity issues. The focus remains on ensuring that drinking water is reserved for essential uses only, thereby safeguarding the city's future water supply.
