Bengaluru to Hyderabad Travel Set to Get Faster with 130 kmph Rail Upgrade, Travel Time to Drop

Bengaluru rail passengers are set for faster journeys as the Yelahanka-Dharmavaram rail route now permits 130 kmph operations. The Commissioner for Rail Safety has cleared the upgraded section, which supports key long-distance and semi-high-speed services. Authorities expect shorter travel times and smoother movement on this important corridor.

The 161-kilometre Yelahanka-Dharmavaram stretch earlier allowed trains to run at only 110 kmph. Safety checks for the fully doubled track have now been completed, and South Western Railway's chief track engineer has granted final approval. The route serves services heading from Bengaluru towards northeastern parts of the country.

Bengaluru rail route 130 kmph upgrade and network impact

With the clearance, Yelahanka-Dharmavaram becomes the second corridor in the Bengaluru railway division cleared for 130 kmph. The Bengaluru-Jolarpettai line was the first in the division to receive this higher limit. Officials view both stretches as essential for handling growing passenger and train volumes.

Among the main beneficiaries is the Yeshwantpur-Kacheguda Vande Bharat Express, which links Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Vande Bharat trains are built for 160 kmph running, yet they often operate below that potential. The revised 130 kmph cap on this corridor should cut travel time and support better timetable reliability.

Another major Bengaluru project is also reaching a crucial phase, with track quadrupling between Byappanahalli and Bengaluru Cantonment nearly ready. The work covers a 5-kilometre stretch and includes Bengaluru East halt station. New third and fourth lines have been laid to increase capacity through this busy section.

The Commissioner for Rail Safety recently carried out a statutory inspection and speed trials on the additional lines over two days. The assessment was successful, and permission has been issued to commission these tracks. Railway managers expect the expanded section to relieve congestion on one of the city's most used rail approaches.

Together, the higher-speed Yelahanka-Dharmavaram corridor and the strengthened Byappanahalli-Cantonment section are expected to improve capacity, reduce delays and enhance connectivity. Passengers travelling to and from Bengaluru, especially towards Hyderabad and northeastern destinations, are likely to see gradual improvements in journey times and overall service reliability.
