Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Gears Up: Chikkabanavara To Yeshwantpur Ready For 2025 Launch
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) is making significant strides, with the first phase covering a 7.4 km stretch from Chikkabanavara to Yeshwantpur set to be operational by December 2025, announced Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil. This announcement followed his visit to the Gollahalli casting yard near Devanahalli, where he inspected the country's inaugural 100-ft (31-m) U-girder, a technological milestone for the project.

Patil highlighted the innovative nature of this milestone, as the BSRP will be the first project in India to use 31-m U-girders for its viaduct construction, a departure from the 28-m U-girders used in metro railway projects. He emphasized that this new design concept will not only reduce construction time but also enhance aesthetics, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The project requires approximately 450 of these girders for the construction of an 8 km viaduct from Hebbal to Yeshwantpur, part of the 'Mallige' line or Corridor-2 of the BSRP. Additionally, the Gollahalli yard will produce 323 I-girders and 283 pier caps for the project.
Regarding the overall progress of the BSRP, Patil noted that about 20% of the permanent work has been completed. Land acquisition for Corridor-2 (Chikkabanavara to Benniganahalli) is almost complete, with 98.5% of the required 120.44 acres acquired.
Patil also discussed the challenges faced during the project, such as encroachments and coordination with various stakeholders for utilities and land acquisition. He emphasized ongoing discussions with organizations like the BBMP, BDA, BWSSB, Bescom, BSNL, and private telephone agencies for utilities shifting/diversions and land acquisition.
The entire BSRP, valued at ₹15,677 crore and spanning 148.17 km, is expected to be completed by December 2027. Patil urged the Railway Ministry to provide encroachment-free land as per the DPR and to approve project designs in a timely manner. He also called for the alignment approval and land handover for Corridor-1 (KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli) and Corridor-3 (Kengeri to Whitefield) by June 2024 to maintain project timelines.
Regarding future plans, Patil mentioned that K-RIDE is considering connecting the BSRP with the Peripheral Railway Network, a project the Railways intends to undertake in the coming years. He expressed a desire to extend the network to satellite towns, with discussions planned with the Railways for approval.
Patil dismissed reports alleging K-RIDE's lack of technical expertise, stating that the organization is competent to handle mega projects like the BSRP. He cautioned against politicizing such matters, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts for successful project execution.
