Bengaluru Second Airport Location Zeros in on Kanakapura Road Sites; Chudahalli and Somanahalli Lead Race

Bengaluru is set to get a second airport, with the Karnataka government indicating that the new facility will come up in the southern part of the city. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has said that sites along Kanakapura Road are currently under focus, with Chudahalli and Somanahalli emerging as the leading options.

Speaking at the Network18 Future of Work Summit, he confirmed that the second airport will be planned in south Bengaluru. A third site near Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in the western corridor is also being considered.

Bengaluru Second Airport Location and Capacity Need

The plan for a second airport comes as air traffic in Bengaluru continues to grow. Kempegowda International Airport has already seen multiple expansions, but projections indicate that it could reach capacity limits in the coming years.

The HAL Airport handles only limited operations and cannot be expanded for regular commercial use. This leaves the city dependent on one major airport.

Road congestion towards the airport has also increased, with vehicle numbers rising across the city. Officials say a second airport will help improve connectivity and support future growth.

Bengaluru Second Airport Feasibility Study Details

The state has appointed a Meinhardt-KPMG consortium to conduct a feasibility study for the shortlisted locations. The study, awarded for Rs 4.96 crore, will run for about five months.

The assessment will look at terrain, soil conditions, drainage, airspace management and distance from existing airports. It will also examine road and rail connectivity, environmental impact and long-term passenger and cargo demand.

Bengaluru Second Airport Land and Connectivity Factors

Around 4,500 acres have been identified for each proposed site. The Kanakapura Road locations are closer to fast-growing residential and industrial areas in south Bengaluru, which gives them an advantage.

Authorities are also studying how these sites can be connected to upcoming road and rail networks.

The Nelamangala-Kunigal Road site connects to Tumakuru Road and nearby industrial areas, but it is currently behind the southern options.

Bengaluru Second Airport Location Decision Pending

Tamil Nadu is also planning an international airport in Hosur, close to the Karnataka border. Officials have indicated that delays in finalising the Bengaluru second airport location could impact traffic and investment.

For now, the focus remains on Kanakapura Road, but the final decision will be taken after the feasibility study is completed.
