Bengaluru Second Airport Location Finalisation in 5 Months, Feasibility Study Begins for 3 Shortlisted Sites

Bengaluru's long-awaited second international airport project is moving into a crucial phase, with the Karnataka government initiating the next stage of planning to manage rising air traffic demand. Industries Minister M.B. Patil has said the proposed airport is aimed at easing pressure on Kempegowda International Airport, which is expected to reach its peak capacity by 2030 as passenger numbers and flight movements continue to grow.

Why Bengaluru Needs a Second Airport

The need for a second airport has gained urgency as Bengaluru strengthens its position as a major IT, startup and industrial hub, driving a steady increase in domestic and international travel. While expansion work is ongoing at the existing airport in Devanahalli, officials believe that capacity constraints in the long term cannot be addressed by expansion alone.

The distance of around 40 km from the city centre has also been a concern, particularly for residents in south and west Bengaluru who face long travel times. A second airport is expected to improve accessibility and reduce congestion.

Three Locations Shortlisted for New Airport

The Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation has identified three potential locations on the outskirts of the city. These include Somanahalli and Choodahalli along Kanakapura Road in south Bengaluru, and a third site near Chikkasoluru on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road corridor in the western region.

These locations have been inspected by the Airports Authority of India, which assessed key factors such as land conditions, terrain, connectivity and overall suitability for airport operations.

AAI Flags Key Challenges at Proposed Sites

Officials said the AAI has pointed out several concerns at the shortlisted locations, including hilly terrain, uneven ground and potential weather-related disruptions. Airspace congestion due to nearby aviation zones is another factor that may impact operations.

These challenges will be studied in detail to determine whether an airport can be safely and efficiently developed at any of the proposed sites.

Feasibility Study and DPR Process Explained

The state government has invited tenders to appoint consultants for preparing both the feasibility report and the Detailed Project Report. Around three to four firms have responded, and the selection process is expected to be completed soon.

The feasibility study will determine whether the project is technically and financially viable, while the DPR will provide a detailed blueprint covering design, cost estimates, timelines and infrastructure planning. Consultants are expected to submit their reports within about five months of appointment.

When Will the Second Airport Be Ready?

Based on the findings of these reports, the government will take a final decision on the location and project design. Approvals from the Union government will follow before construction begins.

Officials are targeting an operational timeline of around 2033, ensuring the city is prepared for future aviation demand. The second airport is expected to boost connectivity, support cargo and logistics growth, and strengthen Karnataka's overall economic ecosystem.
