Bengaluru’s Peenya Flyover Update: Heavy Vehicles Ban Likely To Return In The Coming Months?
Since July 29, heavy vehicles have been permitted to use the 4.2-km Peenya flyover in Bengaluru. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had lifted this restriction, permitting vehicles to use the flyover except on Fridays. On Fridays, from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the following Saturday, heavy vehicle movement is still prohibited due to ongoing repair work.
The Peenya flyover's maintenance schedule involves a weekly inspection of the cables laid on the structure. According to reports, 1,243 new cables have already been installed. The quality of these cables is assessed under the conditions of solid vehicle traffic. Despite this, there are ongoing doubts about whether the flyover will experience further closures.

Transportation and traffic expert MN Srihari has raised the possibility of future traffic bans, citing that 100% of the repair work has not yet been completed. This has led to speculation that the flyover might be closed again for additional maintenance in the coming months.
Motorists are expressing concerns about the reliability of the flyover, particularly given the pattern of restrictions and ongoing repairs. They fear that the need for future maintenance could lead to repeated disruptions.
The National Highway Authority has currently authorised the use of the flyover by heavy vehicles, asserting that the structure is safe. Nevertheless, the repeated maintenance schedule and expert opinions suggest that there may be further closures to ensure the flyover's long-term safety and functionality.
