Bengaluru’s HAL Airport To Handle 4 Million Passengers Annually By 2047
Bengaluru's HAL Airport is set to witness a significant transformation as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman approves a comprehensive master plan, according to sources.
Once the city's primary airport until 2008, HAL Airport will be revamped to meet the rising demand for air travel. Currently, it handles around 12 small aircraft daily, including those for defence forces, VIPs, and private firms. The airport operates 24/7 with a single runway and 30 parking spots.

The new master plan, effective until 2047, aims to handle 4 million passengers annually and up to 2,500 during peak hours. Back in 2007-08, HAL served over a million passengers before commercial operations moved to Kempegowda International Airport.
Phase 1 of the upgrade will include:
- Expanding the terminal area from 21,885 sqm to 32,000 sqm.
- Replacing the existing terminal with a modern facility featuring separate 'Arrivals' and 'Departures' levels.
- Adding a multi-level car park for 500 vehicles.
- Widening the terminal road from two lanes to four lanes.
The runway, measuring 3,306 meters long and 61 meters wide, will remain unchanged and is regarded as one of India's finest.
The exclusivity agreement between HAL and Bangalore International Airport Limited, which restricts other airports within 150 km, will expire in May 2033. This paves the way for HAL to operate alongside Bengaluru's second airport, essential for accommodating the city's booming growth and air travel needs.
Operational since 1941 and commencing commercial flights in 1946, HAL Airport has a storied past. It could play a pivotal role in the UDAAN Regional Connectivity Scheme, linking Bengaluru to nearby cities.
While the cost of the upgrade is yet to be determined, passengers can look forward to enhanced amenities and a renewed travel experience.
