Bengaluru Rains: Heavy Showers Lash Many Parts Of City; Yellow Alert For Next 72 Hours

Heavy rains lashed parts of Bengaluru on Monday causing traffic snarls and commuters to be stuck in their vehicles for hours. The rains also led to waterlogging in many parts of the city, making it difficult for people to move around.

In recent developments, South West parts of Bengaluru witnessed an intense storm and downpour, leaving residents to grapple with the vagaries of the monsoon. Areas such as Kengeri, RR Nagara, Uttarahalli, Nagarabhavi, Bangalore University, Ullalu, Nayandahalli, Kumbalagodu, and their surroundings were hit hard by the deluge.

Heavy Rains were also reported in the north, south, southwest, and central business district (CBD) parts of the city.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru Traffic Police has also issued advisory:

Yellow Alert In Bengaluru

According to The Weather Channel, these thunderstorms are expected to persist and continue drenching the city for at least the next 3-4 days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate showers to heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) and accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in South Interior Karnataka until Tuesday, October 10.

According to weather agency IMD has also issued a yellow alert for the region, effective for the next 72 hours.

The timely arrival of these rains is significant as Karnataka has been grappling with substantial rainfall deficits and chronic water scarcity throughout the southwest monsoon season. Between October 1 and 8, the state collectively recorded a mere 15.8 mm of rainfall, leading to a substantial shortfall of 66%. Bengaluru hasn't fared much better, registering only 0.6 mm of rainfall during the initial week of this month.

Meanwhile, many roads in the city were waterlogged, making it difficult for vehicles to pass through. This led to traffic snarls in many parts of the city. Commuters were stuck in their vehicles for hours, trying to get to work or home.

In an X post, Bengaluru traffic police wrote,''Due to water logging slow-moving traffic near CQAL cross, Jaymahal main road. Kindly co-operate. Be safe.''
