Bengaluru Police Arrest Doctor, Technician For Allegedly Performing 900 Illegal Abortions

The Bengaluru Police have arrested Dr. Chandan Ballal and lab technician Nisar for allegedly performing nearly 900 illegal abortions over three years, charging approximately Rs 30,000 per procedure at a Mysuru hospital. Both were apprehended last week.

Earlier this month, the hospital's manager, Meena, and receptionist, Rizma Khan, were also taken into custody, as per police statements.

The police uncovered a sex-determination and female foeticide operation last month, arresting Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar in Mandya. The duo was apprehended while transporting a pregnant woman for an abortion. Upon interrogation, they disclosed a jaggery unit in Mandya doubling as an unauthorized ultrasound scan center. Subsequently, authorities seized the machine lacking valid authorisation or official documentation.

"A preliminary inquiry revealed that in the past three years, the accused doctor and associates conducted roughly 900 illegal abortions at the Mysuru Hospital, charging about Rs 30,000 per procedure," stated a senior police officer.

The investigation continues to apprehend other suspects involved in this racket.
