A 33-year-old neurosurgeon in Bengaluru has been booked for allegedly throwing a community dog from the second floor of his flat, resulting in the animal's death, The Indian Express reported.

The incident took place at approximately 2:30 am on 20 April at Brindavan Apartments in Lakkasandra, southeast Bengaluru.

According to the report, the dog-named Scooby-was being looked after by residents of the housing complex.

A complaint lodged by Ayush Bannerjee, a 22-year-old student, stated that Scooby fell onto a parked vehicle, shattering the windscreen and suffering fatal head injuries.

Witnesses claimed that Dr Sagar Ballal was seen entering his flat shortly after the incident and locking the door. He allegedly ignored residents' attempts to contact him and kept his lights switched off throughout the night.

When approached the following morning, Dr Ballal denied any involvement. Based on the complaint, Adugodi Police booked him under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to causing grievous harm to animals.

Residents claimed this was not the first such incident involving Scooby. On February 5, the dog was reportedly found injured under similar circumstances and was treated for a spinal fracture at a city veterinary clinic. It had only returned to the complex four days prior to the fatal fall.

A serial offender?

The police complaint also reportedly referenced a previous case involving Dr Ballal in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

In 2022, he was named in an FIR filed by the animal rights group People for Animals, which accused him of harming a stray dog.

However, the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed the FIR in 2024, citing a lack of solid evidence.

Bengaluru Police stated that they are currently reviewing CCTV footage and collecting further witness accounts to establish the sequence of events on the night in question.
