Bengaluru: Namma Metro To Be Renamed As 'Basava Metro'?

The iconic Namma Metro in Bengaluru may soon carry a new name - Basava Metro. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has proposed the change to the central government, aiming to celebrate the legacy of Basavanna, the 12th-century Lingayat reformer who championed equality and social justice.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Basava Culture Campaign-2025, Siddaramaiah expressed deep admiration for the saint's vision.

"If this were entirely a state project, I would have named it 'Basava Metro' today itself," he said, highlighting his commitment to honoring Basavanna's ideals.

From Spiritual Leader to Cultural Icon

Basavanna, often called Vishwaguru Basavanna, was more than a spiritual leader - he was a visionary who founded Anubhava Mantapa, the world's first democratic spiritual assembly. His teachings emphasized unity across castes, equality for all, and social reform, values that continue to resonate in Karnataka today.

In January 2024, the state formally recognized him as the "Cultural Leader of Karnataka", underscoring his enduring influence on the state's identity.

Siddaramaiah connected these teachings to contemporary India:

"In our society, we have many castes and religions. Basavanna taught us that we are all one. His vision aligns perfectly with the values enshrined in our Constitution - freedom, equality, and fraternity."

Government Moves to Keep the Legacy Alive

• The state government has already taken steps to honor Basavanna:
• Mandatory display of his portrait in all government offices.
• Plans to establish a Vachana University dedicated to studying Basavanna's philosophy.
• Welfare schemes promoting equal opportunities across Karnataka.

If the Centre approves the metro renaming, it will not only reflect a transportation milestone but also serve as a symbol of Basavanna's message of inclusion and equality, bringing his centuries-old teachings into the everyday lives of Bengaluru residents.
