Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway: NHAI To Address Service Road Gaps

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to build railway overbridges (ROBs) on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway. These ROBs aim to eliminate the need for long detours through nearby towns, ensuring a smoother journey for drivers and locals. Since the highway's opening in March 2023, gaps in the service road have frustrated commuters.

Praveen Kumar, a frequent traveller on this route from Bengaluru, expressed relief at the news. "These interruptions have been a major hassle for everyone. It's great that NHAI is finally addressing this issue. At Maddur and Ramanagara, we used to face incomplete service roads, which used to confuse us earlier," he said.

Highway Infrastructure Enhancements

NHAI officials stated that work on unfinished sections of the service road will occur alongside ROB construction. This approach addresses ongoing complaints about discontinuous service roads. Residents from nearby villages have long voiced their concerns about these issues.

The introduction of ROBs will improve connectivity and ease congestion, benefiting both long-distance travellers and local residents. Construction is set to begin soon with a tender already issued for the project.

Additional Toll Plazas

NHAI recently announced plans to add more toll plazas along the highway for those travelling between intermediate towns. The proposed enhancements are estimated at ₹711 crore. Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar commented on this plan.

"The introduction of new toll plazas would enable motorists to pay tolls proportionate to the distance they travel between intermediate locations, making it more convenient for short-distance users," he explained.

Under NHAI rules, toll plazas should ideally be spaced 60 kilometres apart. For shorter journeys, tolls will be calculated based on actual distance travelled, ensuring fair pricing for all road users.

The new ROBs will allow vehicles to travel parallel to the main highway without deviation, offering direct access between Bengaluru and Mysuru," a NHAI official said.
