Bengaluru: Rural children to benefit from mobile speech and hearing outreach bus
Bengaluru, Feb 28: In a bid to reach out to the underprivileged and those specially in the rural areas, the Dr S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bengaluru launched a mobile speech and hearing outreach bus here.
The Institute in association with Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) aims to provide community services to those in the rural areas.
Speaking at the launch of the mobile unit, M S Venkatesh, Chairman, Dr S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing said that the ‘bus is first of its kind in India.'
"With the launch of this bus we aim to create a provision for children in the rural and urban areas where they can be screened at an early age for any signs of hearing impairment," he said. He added that if hearing impairment is detected in the early stages, with the help of proper hearing aid the individual can lead a normal life.
The bus comes with many features including sound treated room, clinical audiometer and instruments that can be used on new born babies to detect any hearing impairment. It also offers comprehensive treatment and consultation for children and adults.
The project will also offer hearing aids to those living in rural areas and will benefit those who cannot afford the treatment in the city.
The project has been supported by the LCIF and has received funds of $100,000 from the same.
