Bengaluru-Mangalore Expressway Update: Work on 335 Km Corridor Begins Soon; Safer Travel by 2028
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Karnataka's Public Works Department (PWD) have undertaken a major expressway project to enhance connectivity between Bengaluru and Mangalore. The expressway will span 335 km and feature four to six lanes, significantly reducing travel time and improving road infrastructure in the state.
Project Overview and Implementation

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is overseeing the project, which aims to cut travel time between Bengaluru and Mangalore to 4-5 hours. Currently, the journey is often disrupted by traffic congestion and seasonal landslides, especially along the existing routes.
Timeline and Development Plans
In July, the government invited bids for a consultant to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and by November, nine firms had submitted their technical proposals. The selected firm will be given 540 days to complete the DPR, with construction expected to commence in 2028.
The expressway will pass through Hassan, providing a safer, faster, and more efficient transportation corridor. The new route is expected to reduce congestion and significantly boost economic activity in the region by facilitating the movement of goods and people.
Once completed, the Bengaluru-Mangalore Expressway will transform Karnataka's road network, promoting seamless travel and enhancing connectivity between two of the state's key cities.
