Bengaluru Man Dies by Suicide in Nagpur Days After Wife’s Death; Mother Critical

A 36-year-old man from Bengaluru died by suicide at a hotel in Maharashtra's Nagpur on Saturday, just two days after his wife passed away following a suicide attempt in the city. His mother, who had travelled with him, also attempted suicide and is currently in critical condition, police said.

The man has been identified as Suraj Shivanna. According to police, he was found dead in a hotel room on Wardha Road in Nagpur. His mother, Jayanti, was discovered unconscious at the same location and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains under treatment.

The incident comes amid mounting legal and social pressure following the death of Suraj's wife, Ganavi, 26, in Bengaluru earlier this week.

Events leading up to the tragedy

Suraj and Ganavi were married on October 29 in Bengaluru. After their wedding, the couple travelled to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon but returned early due to a reported dispute. Ganavi later went to stay with her parents, who alleged that she faced rejection and humiliation from her in-laws.

On Tuesday, Ganavi attempted suicide and was taken to hospital, where doctors later declared her brain dead. She was kept on ventilator support and died on Thursday.

Following her death, Ganavi's parents lodged a complaint with Bengaluru Police, accusing Suraj and his family of dowry harassment and alleging that he had driven her to suicide. A case was registered based on their complaint, and protests were held outside Suraj's family home demanding arrests.

Travel to Nagpur and police action

Amid the backlash, Suraj and his mother reportedly left Bengaluru and travelled over 1,000 kilometres to Nagpur. On Saturday, Suraj's brother, Sanjay Shivanna, alerted Nagpur Police about the suicide attempt at the hotel.

Police officials said Suraj was found dead in the room, while his mother was alive but in critical condition. Suraj's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway.

Investigation continues

Nagpur Police are coordinating with Bengaluru Police as both cases are being examined together. Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding both deaths, including the allegations of dowry harassment and the events leading to the family's travel to Nagpur.

Police said further action would depend on post-mortem reports, medical updates on Suraj's mother and findings from the ongoing investigation.
