Bengaluru: Maldives National Gets Lost Items Back With Help of ‘Safety Island’

A Maldives national who lost his money, bag, passport, and other important documents in Bengaluru was able to get them back within hours thanks to the help of a newly installed 'Safety Island'.

As per the reports, a football team from Maldives had come to Bengaluru for the South Asian Football Federation Championship. One of the team's photographers took an autorickshaw to Garuda Mall but he had forgotten his belongings after getting off. He panicked when he realised what had happened, but a few people nearby suggested that he use the Safety Island, which is a blue telephone booth-like structure that is installed at different junctions in the city.

The man pressed the SOS button on the Safety Island and explained the situation to the control room. The Ashok Nagar police were able to track down the auto rickshaw and return the man's belongings to him within a few hours.

Safety Islands are designed to help people in distress who do not have access to their mobile phones. They are equipped with a panic button that can be used to contact the police, as well as a speaker and a CCTV camera.

The Bengaluru police have installed 30 Safety Islands across the city in areas with high foot traffic, such as bus stops, markets, and malls. The goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for women and other vulnerable groups.
