Bengaluru Housemaid Nabbed After Flaunting Stolen Necklace In WhatsApp Profile Picture
After nearly four months of investigation, Bengaluru police have arrested a former housemaid who was found wearing a stolen necklace in her WhatsApp profile picture. The arrest came after a family in Bengaluru reported their jewellery missing, leading to the discovery of the suspect through her social media display picture.

The suspect, Renuka, confessed to the theft and was also linked to another burglary in the same apartment complex. The incident occurred under the HAL police limits from the Whitefield division, where Renuka had previously worked as a domestic employee at the Purva Fountain Square Apartment complex.
Discovery Through Social Media
On March 30, Brijesh Dhami, 36, who resides in the southeast Bengaluru apartment complex, lodged a complaint alleging that valuable jewellery had vanished. According to Dhami's complaint, his wife last wore the jewellery during Diwali 2023. The missing items included two rings, a pair of bangles, earrings, a necklace, a gold chain, and several smaller pieces stored in a bag within a cupboard.
The family discovered the bag was empty when they checked for their valuables on March 29, 2023. An FIR listed four domestic workers employed by the family as suspects, including Renuka. Despite initial investigations and interrogations of all four suspects, police found no leads at that time.
Breakthrough in Investigation
Whitefield DCP Shivakumar Gunare spoke to reporters about the breakthrough. "Several months later," he said, "one of the domestic workers took a photograph of herself wearing the stolen necklace and put up the photograph as her WhatsApp display picture. The former employers noticed this and alerted the police."
On July 30, Renuka was brought in for questioning from her home in Munnekolalu, Marathahalli. During interrogation, she admitted to stealing from Dhami's apartment and revealed her involvement in another theft within the same complex.
This case highlights how social media can sometimes inadvertently aid law enforcement in solving crimes. The vigilance of Renuka's former employers played a crucial role in bringing her to justice.
The investigation continues as authorities look into other potential thefts linked to Renuka. Her confession has provided significant leads that may help solve additional cases within the apartment complex.
The police urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough background checks when hiring domestic help.
The case underscores how technology can assist traditional policing methods. By combining digital evidence with conventional investigative techniques, law enforcement can effectively solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
As investigations proceed, authorities are hopeful that more stolen items will be recovered and returned to their rightful owners. The community remains watchful as they await further developments in this ongoing case.
