Bengaluru Gets 5 Civic Bodies Under GBA: Draft Notification Issued; Check Where Your Area Falls

In a major step towards decentralising urban governance, the Karnataka government has issued a draft notification proposing the formation of five municipal corporations under the newly established Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which replaces the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as the city's primary civic body. This restructuring aims to enhance local administration, empower grassroots-level party workers, and streamline civic services across Bengaluru.

According to the draft plan, Central Bengaluru Corporation is likely to include:

Shanti Nagar

Pulakeshi Nagar

Chickpet

Gandhinagar

Chamarajpet

Meanwhile, the city's outer zones may fall under the East, West, North, or South Bengaluru Corporations.

Due to their vast geographic spread, constituencies such as Rajarajeshwari Nagar (RR Nagar), Yeshwanthpur, Mahadevapura, and KR Puram have been divided between two or more municipal corporations.

This development follows the notification of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, issued on April 24. The Act officially repealed the BBMP Act and laid down guidelines for forming a new Greater Bengaluru Governance Authority (GBA) and up to seven municipal corporations, to be completed within 120 days of notification.

The government has allotted 30 days for the public to file objections or suggestions regarding the draft. After the objection period ends, the final notification is expected to be issued by August 25, subject to Governor's approval-the deadline set under the 2024 Act.

This restructuring is expected to be followed by municipal elections, bringing in elected representatives under the new setup and strengthening the urban democratic process.
