Bengaluru: Elderly Man, Minor Electrocuted In Flooded Basement As Rains Paralyse City

An elderly man and a young boy lost their lives after suffering electric shocks in a waterlogged basement of a residential complex in Bengaluru, marking a tragic end to a rain-soaked day that brought the city to a standstill on Monday.

According to an NDTV report, Manmohan Kamath, aged 63, was reportedly using an external motor to pump out water from the cellar when he was electrocuted due to a short circuit. Dinesh, a 12-year-old boy who was inside the flooded basement at the time, was also fatally electrocuted.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 pm in Madhuvan Apartments, located in BTM 2nd Stage.

Bengaluru recorded around 104 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours, inundating several low-lying areas and causing severe traffic congestion.

The disruption was yet another reminder of the city's chronic struggle with monsoon-related flooding-an issue the tech hub faces year after year.

Footage circulating on social media showed extensive waterlogging across multiple localities, with the city's infrastructure once again buckling under the strain of heavy rain. In a separate rain-related incident, a 35-year-old woman tragically died after a wall collapsed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several regions in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, warning of continued rainfall over the next two days. Local authorities have since begun operations to reduce the impact of flooding.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated on Monday that the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which has replaced the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is actively addressing the city's waterlogging crisis.

He attributed part of the problem to clogged drainage systems, caused by the accumulation of leaves, paper, and other waste materials on the roads.
