Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: Slow Progress in Andhra And Tamil Nadu Delays Completion

The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, which promises to improve road connectivity between the two cities, is facing delays. Initially, scheduled for completion by August 2025, the project is now expected to be ready only by June 2026. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cited construction-related challenges as the reason for the delay.

The four-lane, access-controlled Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will begin at the Hoskote interchange on the Old Madras Road in eastern Bengaluru and extend for 73 kilometers, ending near Venkatagirikota (V Kota) in Andhra Pradesh.

Work Progress in Different States

Out of the 262 km stretch, only 71 km has been completed so far. The Karnataka portion of the highway was finished in December 2024 and has been informally opened for traffic. However, construction in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu has been moving slowly, causing the project to fall behind schedule.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, while responding to a question from Rajya Sabha MP Lahar Singh Siroya, stated that the expressway is likely to be completed by mid-2026, as reported by The Hindu. Although a 68-km stretch in Karnataka is already in use, it has not yet been officially inaugurated.

Faster Travel Time Between Bengaluru and Chennai

Once finished, the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will pass through Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, ending at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The four-lane highway has been designed for high-speed travel, allowing vehicles to move at speeds of 120 kmph. This will cut down travel time between the two cities from seven hours to just three hours.

South India's First Greenfield Expressway

This project, built at a cost of ₹17,900 crore, is being called South India's first greenfield expressway. Even though construction is incomplete, nearly 1,600 to 2,000 vehicles are already using the finished sections every day.

Though the delay is disappointing, once the expressway is fully operational, it is expected to boost connectivity, support economic growth, and make travel between Bengaluru and Chennai much faster and smoother.
