Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: NHAI Scraps Contract, Nesco To Finish Remaining 17 Km By January-End

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a decisive move to mitigate the traffic and accident issues on the Chennai-Bangaluru National Expressway by terminating the contract of the delayed project's company. This crucial route, connecting two of India's major cities, has been a source of frustration for many due to its incomplete expansion from four lanes to six lanes. Initiated in 2021 with a budget of Rs. 654 crore, the project aimed at easing the daily congestion and reducing accidents significantly. Unfortunately, the contracted company could only achieve 57% of the work, failing to meet the set deadlines, thereby exacerbating the problems for commuters and local dwellers alike.

Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway Phase II NHAI Announces New Contractor NESCO To Finish Remaining Work

In response to the contractor's inability to fulfill their obligations, the NHAI has swiftly taken steps to ensure the project's completion. A re-tendering process brought forward a new contractor, tasked with finishing the remaining 17 kilometers of road work. The NHAI has set a new deadline, mandating that construction be completed by the end of January. ''

A senior official from the NHAI confirmed, "57 percent of the work on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway has been completed. We have re-tendered for completing the remaining 17 km of road work. The new contractor will start construction work by the end of January. Steps will be taken to complete the work soon," highlighting the authority's commitment to resolving the issue promptly.

The initial plan for the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway was ambitious, proposing the widening of the road, the construction of minor bridges at 18 locations, and the erection of flyovers at three strategic points. However, the project encountered significant setbacks, notably in the construction of flyovers, with some works like the Sriperumbudur-Oragadam junction flyover not even started. Despite constructing alternative routes and flyovers at places like Chinnayanchatram, Rajakulam, and Enathur, the project's progress has been impeded by various factors, including the absence of ramp facilities and issues with ash dumping.

Motorists, particularly those travelling from Kanchipuram to Chennai, have been facing relentless traffic jams at several points along the highway, such as Enathur, Rajakulam, Chinnayanchatram, and Sriperumbudur. The delay and inconvenience have been a source of public grievance, leading to calls for swift action from the NHAI.

The expansion project had been divided into three phases, with completion deadlines spanning from October 2024 to December 2024. However, this schedule has been disrupted, causing further delays to the much-needed improvements on this vital transportation link. The NHAI's recent actions represent a significant step towards rectifying the situation and fulfilling the promise of a safer and more efficient Chennai-Bangaluru Expressway.
