Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway Accident Sparks Two-Wheeler Ban by NHAI

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has banned the entry of two-wheelers on the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway following a tragic accident that claimed four lives, including a two-year-old girl, on Sunday night.

The incident occurred near Kuppahalli in Bangarpet, Kolar district, when an SUV lost control and crashed into a two-wheeler traveling in the opposite direction. The victims, identified as Mahesh (45), the SUV driver, Ratnamma (60), a front-seat passenger, Udvitha (2), and an unidentified bike rider, died on the spot due to the impact.

Mahesh's family members-Sushmitha, Virutha, Sujatha, and Sunil-who were traveling in the SUV, sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Kolar Gold Fields.

Preliminary investigations suggest overspeeding as the primary cause. A senior police officer stated, "We suspect rash driving and speeding. A forensic analysis of the accident site and vehicles will provide further clarity."

The 68-km stretch of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway in Karnataka was informally opened for traffic last month. The entire project, spanning 260 km through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, is expected to be fully operational by year-end.

The two-wheeler ban, mirroring restrictions on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, currently applies to the Karnataka stretch but may be extended to other sections upon completion.
