Bengaluru Breaks Rain Records: City Logs 80mm Rainfall In Just 3 Days

Bengaluru has typically seen a modest average rainfall of 15.7mm in December, but this year, the city has already exceeded that amount within the first few days of the month. Over the next four days, from December 4 to December 8, residents can expect intermittent showers and light drizzles, as more rain is anticipated.

This increase in precipitation is largely due to the remnants of Cyclone Fengal, which has created a low-pressure area that has moved across Peninsular India and entered the Arabian Sea. Currently, this low-pressure system is situated over the East-Central Arabian Sea, near Karnataka's coastline, and is expected to drift slowly westward. Additionally, there's a cyclonic circulation in the equatorial region of the South Bay of Bengal moving from east to west.

Together, these weather patterns are maintaining a steady flow of northeasterly winds across the peninsula and coastal areas. Some regions, including Karwar, Mangalore, Bengaluru, Kannur, and Ooty, have recorded moderate rainfall, while light rain has affected many other areas.

In the past three days alone, Bengaluru has experienced 80mm of rainfall, significantly surpassing the monthly average of 15.7mm. This improvement comes as a relief after last month's deficit, when the city received only 21.4mm of rain compared to the normal 48.1mm. The recent downpours have effectively made up for the shortfall, with November and December together recording a total of 105.4mm against a normal of 64.6mm. With still more of December ahead, it looks like the rainfall tally could increase further.

The upcoming week will bring light rainfall, followed by a brief respite. However, from December 11 to 13, a surge in both the extent and intensity of rain is likely, particularly during the evening and nighttime. Early mornings may feature a layer of low clouds, which is expected to linger. Overall, the city is likely to enjoy pleasant weather with a mild winter chill for the next ten days or more.
