Bengaluru Becomes India’s 2nd Slowest City In Traffic, Kolkata Claims Top Spot In 2024
Bengaluru has once again grabbed international attention for its severe traffic congestion, ranking as the third slowest city in the world for traffic flow. This revelation comes from the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, which evaluates traffic conditions across major global cities. The Dutch firm TomTom highlighted that, on average, it takes 30 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a mere 10 kilometers in Bengaluru. This marks an increase from the previous year, underscoring the city's growing traffic woes.
The Traffic Index also sheds light on how Bengaluru compares with other cities. Barranquilla and Kolkata are the only cities with slower traffic, taking 36 minutes and six seconds, and 34 minutes and 33 seconds, respectively, to travel the same distance. Interestingly, Pune is a new entry among the world's slowest cities, ranking fourth, illustrating the broader issue of traffic congestion in urban India. Comparatively, in 2023, Bengaluru's average time to cover 10 kilometers was slightly less, around 28 minutes and 10 seconds.

Regarding domestic rankings, Kolkata takes the lead as India's most congested city, with Bengaluru a close second. This wasn't always the case, as Bengaluru's traffic situation has worsened over time. In 2022, the city was the second slowest globally, with an average travel time of 29 minutes and 9 seconds for 10 kilometers and an average speed of 18 km/h, the lowest among Indian cities. This slow pace is not unique to Bengaluru, as cities like London, Dublin, Milan, Lima, and Toronto also report slow average speeds, highlighting a global challenge of urban traffic congestion.
The situation in Bengaluru is aggravated by the ever-increasing number of private vehicles. The city has overtaken New Delhi in this regard, with around 2.5 million private cars on its roads. The continuous addition of nearly 2,000 vehicles each day further strains the city's infrastructure, making traffic jams a regular part of Bengalureans' daily lives. This growing number of private vehicles, coupled with inadequate infrastructure, contributes significantly to the city's traffic congestion issues.
Bengaluru's ranking as the third slowest city globally for traffic flow is a clear indication of the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and traffic management solutions. With daily vehicle registrations adding to the congestion, addressing this issue is critical for enhancing the quality of life for its residents and ensuring the city's sustainable development.
