A 27-year-old woman in Bengaluru has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her boyfriend during what police say was staged as a BDSM role-play at her home in the city's northwest. The incident, reported on April 16, was initially treated as a suspected suicide before investigators flagged inconsistencies and shifted to a murder probe.

Police allege the accused, identified as Prema, tied up and blindfolded her boyfriend Kiran, also 27, before setting him on fire inside the house in Anjananagar, under the Byadarahalli police station limits. Investigators are now examining whether the act was pre-planned, with early findings suggesting the use of an inflammable substance.

According to police, both worked at a mobile service provider store in Rajajinagar and had been in a relationship for nearly two years. Officers suspect friction in the relationship, including Kiran allegedly refusing a marriage proposal, may have contributed to the incident, though motive remains under investigation.

Kiran, a native of Tumakuru district, had reportedly planned to travel to Nelamangala that day. Instead, he went to Prema's residence after receiving a call from her. With family members away, the two were alone at the house when the incident occurred.

Investigators said Prema told Kiran there was a "surprise" and convinced him to participate in an act. She allegedly blindfolded him and tied his hands and legs, describing it as part of the role-play. Police suspect an inflammable liquid was then poured on him before he was set on fire.

Neighbours alerted authorities after hearing screams and noticing smoke. Fire and emergency teams responded, but Kiran died at the scene, unable to escape the restraints.

Officers said the presence of flammable material indicates possible preparation in advance, adding a key angle to the probe.

A senior officer said prima facie evidence suggests the accused restrained the victim under the guise of a consensual act before setting him on fire. However, police say the sequence of events is still being verified.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Nagesh DL said the investigation remains ongoing, with forensic findings and postmortem results expected to provide further clarity.

Kiran's body has been sent to Victoria Hospital for autopsy, while police await a formal complaint from his family as the case moves into the next stage of investigation.
