Bengaluru Airport Taxi Protest Could Leave Flyers With Fewer Cab Options

Passengers travelling to and from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru are likely to face inconvenience as airport taxi drivers, supported by Kannada organisations, launch a protest against a newly introduced fine policy targeting yellow board commercial vehicles near terminal areas.

The agitation is expected to affect taxi availability and traffic movement on the airport stretch, with unions warning of fewer cabs at pick-up points and possible congestion on key access roads.

Why Taxi Drivers Are Protesting

The protest centres on new waiting-time limits imposed on commercial taxis operating near the airport. Under the revised rules, drivers are allowed only a short free window to halt at designated pick-up and drop-off zones before penalties apply.

Taxi unions argue that the policy fails to account for flight delays, baggage claim holdups, long security queues and passenger coordination issues, all of which often force drivers to wait beyond the permitted time through no fault of their own.

According to drivers, these fines make airport trips increasingly expensive and unsustainable, particularly after accounting for fuel costs, toll charges, maintenance expenses and commissions paid to cab aggregators.

Sadahalli Toll Gate Blockade Planned

A major flashpoint of the protest is a planned blockade at the Sadahalli toll gate, a crucial entry and exit point on the Bengaluru airport road. With hundreds of taxi drivers expected to participate, traffic towards and away from the airport could slow significantly, with short standstills also possible.

Unions have indicated that many drivers may boycott airport pick-ups during the protest, which could sharply reduce taxi availability for arriving passengers.

What the Fine Policy Says

Airport authorities say the policy is intended to ease congestion and improve traffic flow around terminal areas. As per the rules, yellow board vehicles can wait up to eight minutes without charge at designated zones. After that, penalties apply in slabs:

8 to 13 minutes: ₹150

13 to 18 minutes: ₹300

Vehicles that repeatedly violate the norms may also face towing or stricter enforcement.

Kannada Groups Join Protest

Several Kannada organisations have joined the agitation, arguing that the policy threatens the livelihoods of local commercial drivers. They are demanding that airport authorities withdraw or revise the fine structure, allowing more realistic waiting times that reflect actual terminal conditions.

Impact on Passengers

Travellers are advised to plan for extra travel time, especially if passing through the Sadahalli toll gate or nearby stretches. Departing passengers may face delays reaching the airport, while those arriving could encounter longer waits for taxis at pick-up zones.

Airport buses, pre-booked private vehicles and ride services arranged in advance may become more reliable options during the protest period.

Airport authorities are expected to deploy traffic management teams to handle congestion, but officials have acknowledged that some disruption is unavoidable if protests intensify.
