Bengaluru Airport Becomes India’s First to Launch Sensory Room for Neurodivergent Travellers

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has become the first airport in India to introduce a sensory room for neurodivergent travellers and individuals with sensory sensitivities.

A neurodivergent individual processes information differently from the typical cognitive pattern.

The facility, situated near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, is designed to provide a soothing environment for passengers who may find airports overwhelming due to factors such as bright lighting, constant announcements, and large crowds, according to a statement from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).

This dedicated space aims to support individuals with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It offers a controlled setting to help travellers manage stress before their journey. Research in sensory regulation and occupational therapy indicates that spending 15-30 minutes in a sensory-friendly space can significantly alleviate feelings of distress and enhance the overall travel experience.

Developed in collaboration with Incluzza, an organisation specialising in disability inclusion, the sensory room features ambient lighting, interactive wall and floor projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station. Additional amenities include a bubble tube, galaxy projector, LED cubes, weighted blankets, crash pads, and therapy mats to promote emotional regulation and relaxation. The room also incorporates auditory elements such as a white noise machine, tactile panels, an infinity mirror, and an aroma diffuser to cater to diverse sensory preferences.

According to the release, this initiative aligns with the airport's broader commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. In 2023, the Disability Inclusion Office by Incluzza, powered by EnAble India, was launched at KIA as part of this ongoing effort.

KIA's managing director and chief executive officer (CEO), Hari Marar, emphasised the airport's dedication to creating a passenger-friendly environment where inclusivity is a fundamental value. "At BLR Airport, we are dedicated to inclusivity and providing a stress-free experience for all travellers. From our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to digital solutions that enhance efficiency, we continuously strive to innovate. The addition of the sensory room further reflects our mission to make the airport a welcoming space for everyone."

Dipesh Sutariya, chairman and managing director of EnAble India, expressed pride in the collaboration with BIAL to design and implement the sensory room. He highlighted the Disability Inclusion Office as a testament to KIA's deep commitment to accessibility. "The Sensory Room is one of many initiatives undertaken by BIAL to ensure all passengers enjoy a comfortable experience. It is encouraging to see accessibility being championed through proactive and thoughtful action. We hope this is the beginning of more such initiatives nationwide.
