BEML Bengaluru Shifts Vande Bharat Sleeper Timeline; First 10 Rakes Now Expected By August 2026

India's next-generation rail upgrade is currently taking shape at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) facility in Bengaluru. However, officials have confirmed that the original delivery timeline for the highly anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper rakes has been pushed back.

While the first 10 rakes were initially expected to be ready by March 31, 2026, that target has been revised. Completion is now tentatively scheduled for August 2026, as the project moves into a critical phase of testing and safety validation.

Second Rake Under Inspection at SMVT Bengaluru

The second Vande Bharat sleeper rake is currently undergoing final inspections at the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. Railway officials stressed that no rake would be cleared for passenger service without full safety certification.

Before being handed over for commercial operations, each train must successfully pass:

• Field trials and braking tests.
• Semi-high-speed performance checks reaching up to 160 kmph.
• Onboard systems inspections to ensure 100% reliability.

Production is expected to pick up pace soon, with the third and fourth rakes slated for completion before the end of March 2026. Following this, BEML plans to maintain a steady production rate of one rake per month.

What Makes These Sleeper Trains Different?

Unlike the current chair car versions seen across India, the sleeper variant is a "game-changer" for long-distance, overnight routes. Key features of the Bengaluru-built trains include:

16-coach configuration with upgraded berths for better ergonomics.

Enhanced passenger safety features and improved lighting.

Advanced suspension systems designed for a smoother ride at high speeds.

Optimized for overnight travel, aimed at providing a faster and more comfortable alternative to existing long-distance express services.

Karnataka to Lead the Rollout

Karnataka is set to be one of the primary beneficiaries of this upgrade. With surging demand for intercity connectivity between Bengaluru and northern districts, the sleeper rollout is expected to drastically improve night travel options for the state's passengers.

Beyond the initial Bengaluru production, the Railway Ministry has announced a massive scale-up. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that 260 additional sleeper rakes will be manufactured nationwide. While BEML focuses on its current 10-rake order, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai will independently build 50 larger rakes featuring 24 coaches and full pantry cars for high-density routes.

For now, the focus remains on "safety over speed." Once the current round of testing at SMVT Bengaluru is cleared, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be introduced in stages, marking a historic shift in how India travels overnight.
