Beer Price Hike: Here’s How Much It Costs In Karnataka Now
In a surprise move that has sent shockwaves for the beer lovers, the Karnataka government has announced an immediate hike in beer prices, effective today i.e January 20, 2025. This decision has left beer lovers disheartened, with sharp increases ranging from ₹10 to ₹45 per unit.
The latest adjustment comes just six months after a previous price increase on imported goods, and it directly impacts beer prices, with several popular brands facing steep hikes. According to the government, the revised excise duty framework is aimed at boosting revenue, with the excise department facing a shortfall despite record liquor sales in the state at the start of the current year.

The price hikes vary across popular beer brands, with the following increases taking effect immediately:
- Legend beer: ₹45 (increased from ₹100 to ₹145)
- Power Cool beer: ₹25 (increased from ₹130 to ₹155)
- Black Fort beer: ₹15 (increased from ₹145 to ₹160)
- Hunter beer: ₹10 (increased from ₹180 to ₹190)
- Wood Pecker Crest: ₹10 (increased from ₹240 to ₹250)
- Wood Pecker Glide: ₹10 (increased from ₹230 to ₹240)
The cumulative impact of the price increase is causing concern among consumers, who are already burdened by other public service charges, including bus fares and rental costs. The situation has been exacerbated by calls from labor unions for a rise in milk prices. Beer enthusiasts, in particular, are vocal about their dissatisfaction with the latest development, which is expected to strain the budgets of regular consumers.
The decision to hike beer prices is part of a broader strategy by the government to review the excise duty framework. In the 2023 budget, excise duties on Indian-made foreign liquor were raised by 20%, with beer prices increasing by 10%. The government is expected to further increase the excise duty on strong beer by 2024, signaling a consistent approach to modifying liquor pricing policies.
As the beer price hike takes effect, residents are bracing for the increased costs, with many expressing disappointment and frustration over the government's decision. Whether the move will have a significant impact on revenue remains to be seen, but for beer enthusiasts in Karnataka, one thing is clear: the price of a favorite pint has just risen substantially.
