BBMP council formation: All eyes on Karnataka High Court

Bengaluru, Sept 7: Who would have thought that the Congress and the JD(S) will come together and try forming the council at the BBMP especially after the mandate was in favour of the BJP.

At the moment it appears as though the JD(S)-Congress combine will form the council.

However, there could well be a turn of events and if the BJP is able to rope in the independents, then the BBMP may get a BJP ruled council as the voters of Bengaluru had wanted.

Tomorrow, the Karnataka High Court is expected to deliver its verdict on a petition filed by the BJP in which the voting powers of MLA's, MP's and MLC's have been questioned.

The BJP states that the elected representatives should not be allowed to vote in the BBMP. The High Court is likely to pass at least an interim order tomorrow and decide on the question of law later.

Tense moments:

The BJP is keeping its cards close to its heart. It has not revealed much about what it would do on September 11 when the Mayoral elections are held.

If the BJP does get a favourable order from the High Court then it could easily form the council. The required strength to form the council is 131.

On the other hand the Congress has already moved all its corporators to a resort to beat any attempts of horse trading. The JD(S) too had moved its corporators to Kerala.

The Congress and the JD(S) have already decided that they would share the top posts. While the Congress would get the post of Mayor, the Deputy Mayor would be from the JD(S).

There have been certain contentious issues such as the splitting of the BBMP and also who gets what while filling up the posts of the standing committee.

However, both parties have decided to bury all those differences for now and just focus on forming the council.
